Raspberry Pi, Linux and VI?

The title sort of says it all, but have any of you successfully ported Linux to a Raspberry Pi with any good results? Thinking about trying this, especially as the new Pi has AMD capability, but interested in the experiences of others.

You seem very confused. If you're comfortable using it over SSH then you should be fine. Speech on the actual device is very hit and miss though.

Confused? How so?

I've managed to install a version that has Speak-up bundled with it. So far, not so bad, but I'm wondering whether Vinux in particular has ever been made to work on a Pi. I've only tried the SSH on a mac so far and couldn't get VO to work properly. Is it any better on Windows?

Re Vinux, I think I remember seeing someone post on the official Raspberry Pi forums that they'd got Ubuntu Trusty (14.04) working on the Pi 2 so whilst the latest version of Vinux appears to be based on 12.04 there may be some hope. Perhaps a better root to take would be to start with a Raspbian image and just install / compile the various packages you want?

The last I heard re speakup support was that stability depended heavyly on the type of RAM that the Pi used. Apparently there are some different varients out there even though this isn't indicated by the model. Glad it works for you.

The Pi 2 supports ARMV7 where as the originals supported ARMV6. Nothing to do with AMD.

Cheers.

I forgot to answer your SSH question. I find it works quite well on Windows; I use PuTTY without that many problems & it's how I use all of my Pi's so have no interest in getting speech working on them.

Hello, all. Are there any tutorials on using SSH? Are you basically remoting into your computer to connect with the pie?

Thanks very much for this. I'm still very new to it all so am still cutting my teeth so to speak. I like the idea of being able to have a fully portable little Pi in my handbag so am keen to get it working without the need for an SSH, but would find it a lot easier on Windows when at home. This is all really useful!

yeah, SSH is remoting into stuff.

i use vinux on my main machine but use ssh on a pi. Don't know i'd want to use it with something like vinux or with speech. seems more like a media device to me or home security system than a computing computer. I took the raspberry pi course from cavi, did not finish my final project due to life events to be fair. There was a lot of basic info, but the end project was making it in to a wikki. So to answer the question is it usable? Yes it is, but it all depends on what you want to do with it.
